The Society for Economic Analysis is deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Alfred Vanags, who died on 26th June 2016. Alf, as we knew him, had been director of the Baltic International Centre for Economic Policy Studies in Riga, the Latvian capital. During the middle and late 1970s, at a time when high inflation was causing some difficulties for the society’s finances, Alf served as the Production Editor of the Review of Economic Studies while holding a position at what has since become Queen Mary University of London. He did a great job, and was always charming, effective and unpretentious. He will be greatly missed by those of us who knew him at that time.
